Let’s face it; caregiving takes a lot of energy. The needs of our loved ones can be emotionally and physically exhausting. There are unexpected turns in the journey that mean we must deal with another change in life. Where do we get the energy for all we have to deal with?
The Bible describes God as the God of all comfort (1Cor. 1:3). Sometimes we grow tired going through the motions of daily caring routines. When we take a short break, we realize we are tired. In that moment we may say a prayer, “Lord, I’m tired. Give me strength.” God comforts us. God has a way of showing up when we need to be comforted.
90% of caring is just showing up. We provide care. God provides the comfort.
I was talking to a person whose senior mom is a resident at a Baruch Senior Living facility. She mentioned that she used to worry about her mom. The daughter wasn’t able to be with her mom all the time. She’d worry about mom when she was at work. She’d worry during a winter storm. God brought comfort to her when her mom moved into a Baruch Senior Living
facility. The daughter has peace of mind knowing someone is there to help with medications, prepare meals, and daily activities.
A resident was feeling lonely. A staff member took the time to listen as the resident shared some personal concerns. The staff member took the time to show up. In showing up she provided the care. God also showed up. He provided comfort to both individuals.
You may not always know what to say to someone going through a challenging
time. Don’t underestimate the impact you are having by being present. 90% of caring is just showing up.
